About Magadh University
Bihar has been a seat of learning since time immemorial. The State had the Universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila that were drawing students even from neighboring countries. One of the primary objectives of the University education is to produce trained manpower, which can accelerate sustained economic growth by harnessing science and technology.
Magadh University is one of the largest universities of Bihar and India. Magadh University, Bodh Gaya (Gaya) took its origin in the year 1962 by the Government of Bihar under Bihar Universities Act IV of 1961. The University is now governed by Bihar State Universities Act 1976 recognized by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi under proper sections. The University headquarter is situated at a distance of 15 km. from Gaya city on an open location with a large sprawling campus. The HQ comprises the main administrative building from where it controls its 24 post graduate departments located in the campus, 44 constituent colleges and 85 affiliated colleges spread over Magadh and Patna Divisions of the state. The university is famous for its verdurous and large environs and for its International study centre for Buddhist students coming from countries like Tibet, Japan,Myanmmar and Thailand.

College of Commerce, Patna 800 020 is a constituent unit and post-graduate centre of Magadh University, Bodh Gaya (Bihar) recognized by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi under its 2(f) and 12(B) sections. It was established in 1949 by Pt. Indu Shekhar Jha with help from personalities like late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India, Late Justice Khalil Ahmad, Late Nageshwar Prasad (Advocate), Late H.B. Chandra, Late Indiraj Bahadur and Late Babu Shyam Nandan Sahay as a pioneer college for Commerce teaching in the state of Bihar. The idea was to start a centre of higher education in commerce on the pattern of London School of Commerce or Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Bombay. Hence the name!
The college was affiliated to Bihar University, Muzaffarpur in 1952 in Bihar. In 1957, Science education was introduced in the college followed by Arts faculty in 1960 and Law in 1963. The college became affiliated to Magadh University, Bodh Gaya in 1962.
The original name of the college “College of Commerce”, mooted by its founder, is still retained, though, a sizable section of the people is of the opinion that it should now be changed to “College of Science, Arts and Commerce”. Such a proposal has been forwarded to the concerned authorities of the university and the state.
The college comprises 20 departments imparting graduate and post graduate education in 67 programs.
